Beyoncé - Best Thing I Never Had

Song Info:

"Best Thing I Never Had" is a song by American singer Beyoncé Knowles taken from her fourth studio album, 4 (2011). It was released by Columbia Records on June 1, 2011, as the second single from the album. "Best Thing I Never Had" was composed by Patrick "J. Que" Smith, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Symbolyc One, Caleb McCambell, Atonio Dixon, Knowles and Shea Taylor. Recording and production of the song took place at MSR Studio as well as KMA Studio in New York City. As stated by Smith, "Best Thing I Never Had", which was originally not a ballad, was inspired by the drums of Doug E. Fresh's song "The Show".

An R&B-pop song, "Best Thing I Never Had" has lyrics about revenge and karma. Not wanting to end up broken-hearted, the female protagonist relates that she feels happy to have parted from her love interest who did not recognize the potential of leading a happy life beside her. Critical reception towards "Best Thing I Never Had" has been generally positive; several music critics noted that its theme and style bear resemblance to Knowles' 2006 single, "Irreplaceable". Knowles' vocals and the lyrical content of the song were also complimented. However, the inclusion of lines, including "showed your ass", were criticized.

Music Video Info:

The music video for "Best Thing I Never Had" was directed by Diane Martel, and was shot in Westchester County on June 15, 2011 and in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, on June 16, 2011. On June 20, 2011, it was revealed that Knowles would not be the one playing the prom queen in the music video. Knowles said that "not being prom queen in the video reminded her of how she never wore the coveted tiara at her own high school dance." However, she added that it was indeed "weird" not to have her real father, Mathew Knowles, walk her down the aisle in the wedding scene, which was shot in a Sleepy Hollow country club on June 15, 2011, because she was escorted down the aisle by her father when she wed Jay-Z in April 2008.[81] On July 20, 2011, Knowles sat for an interview with Access Hollywood, where she spoke of the set of her video for "Best Thing I Never Had"

Alesha Dixon - Radio

Song Info:

"Radio" is a song by English recording artist Alesha Dixon from her third album, The Entertainer. The song is The Entertainer's second single, after "Drummer Boy" and was released on 28 November, coinciding with the album's release. One of the remixes features rapper Wiley, a member of grime band Roll Deep, whom Dixon collaborated with previously whilst featuring on their single, "Take Control". Dixon performed "Radio" for the first time on Strictly Come Dancing on 14 November.

Music Video Info:

The music video for "Radio" was directed by Alex Herron near Los Angeles.[13] The video is set in an American trailer park. Whilst Dixon is in the video, she isn't the main focus. Instead, the video follows the lives of a feuding couple who live next door to Dixon. Their relationship disintergrates, and a fight erupts, causing a nearby elderly woman to dial 9-1-1. The police arrive, and arrest the man, believe domestic abuse has taken place, and the video ends with the police cars driving off, leaving the woman alone in tears. Throughout the video shots of Dixon singing are interspersed, with her either walking through the trailer park, in her caravan, or outside at night.

Female First stated they were "loving the video", and that Dixon "look[ed] fantastic in her little caravan".[10] However, they criticised the unrealistic set that the couple featured in, saying it as "the biggest trailer [they'd] ever seen" and "shame they couldn't fill it with furniture".

Information Society - What's On Your Mind

Song Info:

"What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)" is a song by dance artists Information Society which was released as a single in 1988. The "Pure Energy" subtitle derives from a sample of Leonard Nimoy's voice from the Star Trek episode "Errand of Mercy".[1] There is also a sample of DeForest Kelley's voice from the episode "I, Mudd". John Leland of Spin magazine called it a "pretty potent dance record".[1]

In March and April 2009, VH1 ran a countdown of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders Of The 80s. Information Society's "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)" placed at #74 on the countdown despite the fact that the group had two other Top 40 hits: "Walking Away" (#9) and "Think" (#28).

The song achieved U.S. success when released in 1988, peaking at #3 on the pop charts in October, 1988.[2]

The song was featured in Loverboy and American Psycho.

David Copperfield is known to use this song in his shows

Duran Duran - The Wild Boys

Song Info:

"The Wild Boys" is the twelfth single by Duran Duran, released in October 1984.

The song was the only studio track on the live album Arena, and was produced by Nile Rodgers, who had previously remixed the single "The Reflex". It was recorded at the end of July 1984 at Maison Rouge studios in London.

"The Wild Boys" became one of the band's biggest hits, reaching #2 on the American Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, and hitting #1 on the German charts and the Canadian CHUM Chart. It became the band's biggest charting single in Australia, reaching #3.

Music Video Info:

The video for "The Wild Boys" was directed by Russell Mulcahy. The cost totalled over one million dollars, a staggering sum for music videos at the time, as his design filled one entire end of the "007 Stage" at Pinewood Studios with a metal pyramid and a windmill over a deep enclosed pool, and called for a lifelike robotic face, dozens of elaborate costumes, prosthetics, and makeup effects, and then-cutting-edge computer graphics. The choreography of dance routines was undertaken by Arlene Phillips, including intricate stunts and fire effects added to the cost. Mulcahy meant the video to be a teaser for his full-length Burroughs film, demonstrating his vision to the movie studios he was wooing, but that project was never made.

Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough

Song Info:

"Just Can't Get Enough" is the third UK single by Depeche Mode. It was originally released in the UK in September 1981. It was recorded during the summer of that year, and was the band's first single to be released in the United States, on February 18, 1982.

The song, a riff-driven Synthpop piece, was the final single to be written by founder member Vince Clarke, who would leave the band in December 1981. The song was included on the band's first album, Speak and Spell, which was released a month after the single.

The single version of "Just Can't Get Enough" is the same version that appears on the UK version of Speak and Spell. The 12" single featured a "Schizo Mix", which is an extended version with a different intro and an ambient tune popping up after the choruses. This version appears on the US version of Speak and Spell, the UK rerelease of Speak and Spell, the rerelease of The Singles (81-85) and Remixes 81 - 04.

New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle

Song Info:

"Bizarre Love Triangle" is a single released in 1986 by the English rock band New Order. A version is included on their album Brotherhood.

Though it is one of the group's best known singles, it failed to make the Top 40 in either the United Kingdom or the United States. In the band's native England, "Bizarre Love Triangle" only reached No. 56.[1] In the States, the song failed to chart in its original 1986 release. However, a new mix included on the The Best of New Order was released in 1994 and finally made a brief appearance on Billboard singles chart in the 1995 as a minor hit. The one country where it was a sizable chart hit was Australia, where it reached No. 5, initiating a string of five consecutive Top 20 hits.[citation needed]

In 2004 the song was ranked number 201 in Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Gary Numan - Cars

Song Info:

"Cars" is a 1979 song by UK artist Gary Numan, and was released as a single from the album The Pleasure Principle. It reached the top of the charts in several countries, and today is considered a New Wave staple. In the UK charts, it reached number 1 in 1979, and in 1980 hit number 1 in Canada two weeks running on the RPM national singles chart[1][2] and rose to number 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It debuted on the American Top 40 on 29 March 1980, and spent a total of 17 weeks in the AT40. "Cars" was released under the 'Atco' label, with the catalog number of 7211.

The song was the first release credited solely to Gary Numan after he dropped the band name Tubeway Army, with which he had released four singles and two LPs, including the number one UK hit "Are 'Friends' Electric?", and its parent album, Replicas. Musically, the new song was somewhat lighter and more pop-oriented than its predecessors, Numan later conceding that he had chart success in mind: "This was the first time I had written a song with the intention of 'maybe it could be a hit single'; I was writing this before "Are 'Friends' Electric?" happened".

Music Video Info:

The music video featured Numan's then-current backing band, including Billy Currie from the band Ultravox, though he had not actually played on the recording of "Cars". Towards the end of the video, a multitude of Gary Numans are depicted "driving" (in a standing position, holding an imaginary steering wheel) along a Polymoog keyboard.

Kraftwerk - The Model

Artist Info:

Kraftwerk (German pronunciation: [ˈkʀaftvɛʁk], meaning power plant or power station) is an influential electronic music band from Düsseldorf, Germany. The group was formed by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider in 1970, and was fronted by them until Schneider's departure in 2008. The signature Kraftwerk sound combines driving, repetitive rhythms with catchy melodies, mainly following a Western Classical style of harmony, with a minimalistic and strictly electronic instrumentation. The group's simplified lyrics are at times sung through a vocoder or generated by computer-speech software. Kraftwerk were one of the first groups to popularize electronic music and are considered pioneers in the field. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Kraftwerk's distinctive sound was revolutionary, and has had a lasting effect across many genres of modern music

Spandau Ballet - True

Song Info:

"True" is the title track from Spandau Ballet's 1983 album True, originally recorded at Compass Point Studios, Bahamas. It was composed by group leader, Gary Kemp, and is a six-minute (in its original album version) slow pop-ballad love song that in part pays tribute to the Motown artist Marvin Gaye and the sound he helped to establish.[1] The song was recorded before Gaye's murder a year later.

The song was a huge worldwide hit, peaking at number one in the UK for four weeks in the spring of 1983, becoming the sixth biggest selling single of the year, and charting highly in 20 other countries. It is Spandau Ballet's biggest hit and their most remembered song in the U.S., reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the autumn of that same year and topping the adult contemporary chart for one week.[2] It is notable for its use in the 1984 film Sixteen Candles.

In 1985, the band performed the song during Live Aid. A new mix by Tony Swain and Gary Kemp was released in 2002 on the compilation album Reformation.

On 30 April 2008, the single celebrated its 25th anniversary, and in honour of this, EMI released a brand new True EP on 5 May 2008, which included the original single, the new mix found on Reformation and the remastered album version, plus a live recordings of "True" and "Gold" from the last show of the group's 1983 tour at Sadlers Wells.

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

Song Info:

"Never Gonna Give You Up" is a song written and produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman and sung by English singer Rick Astley. The song was released as the first single from Astley's multi-million selling debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody. The song was a worldwide number-one hit, initially in the singer's native United Kingdom in 1987, where it stayed at number one for five weeks and was the best-selling single of that year. It eventually topped the charts in 25 countries, including the US and Germany.[1]

The song won Best British Single at the 1988 Brit Awards. The music video for the song has become the basis for the "Rickrolling" Internet meme.

In 2008, Rick Astley won the MTV EMA awards for "Best Act Ever" with the song "Never Gonna Give You Up", as a result of collective voting from thousands of people on the internet, due to the popular phenomenon of rickrolling.

Music Video Info:

In the "Never Gonna Give You Up" music video, directed by Simon West,[2] and edited by Robert Bannochie a smiling Astley sings and dances to the song in various outfits and venues in west London, sometimes accompanied by backup dancers. A bartender played by Clive Clarke gradually shifts from casually noticing Astley's singing to being fully engrossed in the song with energetic acrobatic moves. The athletic exertion of many of the other dancers also becomes more intense over the course of Astley's performance.

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares To You

Song Info:

"Nothing Compares 2 U" is a pop song written by American recording artist Prince for one of his side-projects, The Family. However, it wasn't until Sinéad O'Connor recorded her version for the album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got when it became a worldwide hit, topping charts in 15 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Music Video Info:

Mainly shot in Paris, the music video for "Nothing Compares 2 U" was directed by John Maybury. O'Connor's cry toward the end was accidental: she stated on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s that it was caused by the lyric "All the flowers that you planted, Mama/in the back yard/All died when you went away," because she had a very complex relationship with her late mother, who used to abuse her in childhood.

Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Song Info:

"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is a song by the British New Wave band Tears for Fears.

It was the band's ninth single release in the United Kingdom (the third from their second LP: Songs from the Big Chair) and seventh UK Top 40 chart hit, peaking at number two in April 1985. In the U.S., it was the lead single from the album and gave the band their first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit on 8 June 1985, remaining there for two weeks. It also reached number-one on both the Hot Dance Music/Club Play and Hot Dance Singles Sales charts in the U.S. The song has since become the pinnacle of Tears for Fears' chart success, its endurance allowing it to accumulate over two million radio broadcasts by 1994, according to BMI.[citation needed]

In 1986, the song won "Best Single" at the Brit Awards. Orzabal would also argue the song deserved to win the Ivor Novello International Hit of the Year award, claiming that the winner - "19" by Paul Hardcastle - wasn't actually a song; it was just a "garbage dialogue collage."[1]

Music Video Info:

The promotional clip for "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", filmed in early 1985, was the third Tears for Fears clip directed by famed music video producer Nigel Dick. It features Curt Smith driving an antique Austin-Healey 3000 sports car around various Southern California locales, including Salton Sea and Cabazon. Interspersed with these clips are shots of the full band performing the song in a London studio. Along with the clip for "Shout", the "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" video had a big hand in helping break Tears for Fears in America, due to its heavy amount of play on music video pioneer MTV.

Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams

Song Info:

"Shattered Dreams" is a hit pop song by British pop group Johnny Hates Jazz. Written by the band's lead singer Clark Datchler, the band's major-label debut single was a worldwide hit.

"Shattered Dreams" entered the UK Singles Chart in March 1987 at a lowly #92 but gained popularity through extensive radio play and video rotation on MTV and the song quickly climbed the charts and peaked at #5 in May 1987, spending three weeks at the top and a total of 16 weeks in the chart. It went on to become a top five hit throughout Europe and Asia, reaching #2 in Japan.

The song fared even better the following year in the U.S. There, "Shattered Dreams" was released early in 1988 with a totally different music video, shot entirely in black and white and directed by David Fincher. The single peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart for one week [1]. A midtempo club remix of the track was released on 12" vinyl.

Billboard magazine ranked "Shattered Dreams" as the #26 song of the year 1988 in their December 31 issue.[2]

Clark Datchler and the group would soon part, and Datchler released an acoustic version of the song as a track on his 1990 Virgin solo single "Crown of Thorns."

The song has been covered by boyband Ultra, on their UK Top 40 eponymous album in 1999; by House artist Jaybee in 2005[3]; by Russian pop star Sergey Lazarev in 2007; and in 2009 by Quentin Elias, former singer for French boyband Alliage and by house artist Vibelicious.
