Taio Cruz - Break Your Heart

Song Info:

"Break Your Heart" is a song by British recording artist Taio Cruz. It was written by Cruz and Fraser T. Smith and produced by Smith. The song serves as the lead single from his second album, Rokstarr. It was first released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 20 September 2009, followed by a release in the United States and other markets in early 2010. The official remix version features American rapper Ludacris; that version was the single released in North American countries. The song, originally penned for Cheryl Cole, is an uptempo R&B song with electro and dance-pop elements, accompanied by Cruz's auto-tuned vocals. The song is lyrically a warning to someone about being a heartbreaker.

The song received mixed to positive reviews, critics commending its infectious sound, but noting that it was generic. The song peaked at number one in Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, and also within the top ten of many other countries. The accompanying music video features several scenes of Cruz on escapades with different women, including a speedboat compared to classic Diddy and a club scene with Ludacris in the American version.

Music Video Info:

The original music video was filmed in Marbella, Spain in July 2009, including Uzbekistan-born model Nadya Nepomnyashaya with new parts filmed in Miami, Florida in February 2010 to include Ludacris[21] resulting in two versions of the video.[22] The video features Cruz addressing his girlfriend at the beginning of the video, with him she will be heartbroken because he is a heartbreaker, and she is challenging him. Then scenes are shown in several venues, including walking through a city, a club, a beachfront party and a speedboat, and later in room. Ludacris' scenes for the U.S. video feature Cruz and Ludacris in a white concrete backdrop with a flashing light, and a club scene. When asked if an old-school Diddy was an influence on the video, Cruz said, "Probably on some kind of subconscious level. I just love supermodels, I love sunshine, and I love sports cars. And this time we also added a speedboat. So you go the four S’s in there."[5] In an interview with Rap-Up, when talking about the video portraying him as a heartbreaker, Cruz said, "No, not really. I suppose maybe 20%. It was more of just playing a character and having fun, just going out there and making a real cool, fun, cocky video. Not everyone has seen the whole plot of the video, but it’s actually myself and my girlfriend both going out with the intention of breaking everyone’s hearts."

Jason Derulo - In My Head

Song Info:

"In My Head" is a song performed by American pop singer Jason Derülo as the second single released from his self-titled debut album, Jason Derülo. It was first released via digital download on December 9, 2009. It topped the charts in Australia and the United Kingdom, and reached the top ten in several other countries. The song's official remix has a heavier R&B sound, and features Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj.[4] Derülo performed the song on the ninth season of American Idol.

Music Video Info:

The music video was filmed in late December 2009 and released on January 23, 2010 via YouTube. The video begins in the parking lot of a convenience store, with Derülo leaning on a car with some friends when he eventually spots the female lead leaving the store. Derülo is staring at her (with his debut single "Whatcha Say" playing in the background), and eventually he goes up and talks to her and starts singing to her. The video is an extensive dancing video with Derülo dancing near the car with the female lead, in the occasional breakaways, and far more extensively with two male dancers during the bridge of the song. The music video occasionally breaks away to Derülo's silhouette dancing in the fog. Eventually the girl he is dreaming about has joined him. In the end it is revealed that the entire music video was all in Derülo's head and the beginning scene is shown again with the female lead exiting the store as she did at the beginning of the video. As with the beginning, "Whatcha Say" is also played in the end.

Rihanna Feat. Drake - What's My Name

Song Info:

"What's My Name?" is a song performed by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, taken from her fifth studio album Loud (2010). Featuring guest vocals from Canadian rapper Drake, the song was released as the second single from Loud on October 29, 2010 through Def Jam Recordings (Universal Music). The R&B song was produced by Norwegian production duo StarGate, and written by the duo along with Ester Dean, Traci Hale and Drake. "What's My Name?" impacted on Mainstream and Rhythmic radio stations in the United States from October 26, 2010.

Critics praised the song as some of Rihanna's best vocal work to date, for the romantic nature of the song and its sexual tones. There was some negative criticism towards Drake's lyrics which included a sexual innuendo about the square root of 69. The single was a commercial success, topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 giving Rihanna her third number one single of 2010 (out of four), as well as her eighth of nine Hot 100 chart topper. It also became Drake's first ever number one single. "What's My Name?" was also particularly successful reaching the top five in France, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland and the United Kingdom.

An accompanying music video, directed by Philip Andelman, incorporates a romantic encounter between Rihanna and Drake in a grocery store along with romantic scenes between the pair and Rihanna walking through Manhattan's Lower East Side. "What's My Name?" was also promoted with live performances across both sides of the Atlantic, including Saturday Night Live in America and the series seven finale of The X Factor in the United Kingdom, though the latter performance resulted in an investigation from the British media regulator (Ofcom) for the raunchy nature of Rihanna's outfit.

Music Video Info:

Rihanna shot the music video for the song on September 26, 2010 in New York City with director Philip Andelman.[26] Parts of the video shot with Drake were filmed on October 27, 2010.[27] The music video premiered on November 12, 2010 on Rihanna's VEVO channel on YouTube.[28]

The video starts with different views from the city, then shifts to a store where Drake is speaking to the cashier. Rihanna enters, grabbing his attention. She smiles at him and walks towards a fridge and grabs a milk package. Drake follows her and his verse begins. He holds her hand as he raps his verse, the milk package falls from her hand as she holds his, thus spilling milk on the floor. When Drake's verse is over, Rihanna pushes him and walks away with a smile.

When Rihanna's verse starts, she is shown walking on the street and dancing. Views of people holding instruments and walking on the street are shown, in addition to scenes where Rihanna and Drake are in a bedroom together, flirting, talking and drinking champagne. The final scene shows Rihanna in an outdoor Reggae-inspired night party with the people previously shown are now playing instruments as Rihanna sings and dances. The video ends with Drake kissing Rihanna on her cheek in the bedroom. Some of the performers walking with instruments and seen later in the video performing with Rihanna while she sings were Seth Faulk, NYC sideman and drummer in The Nightmare River Band, who carried and later played the maple snare drum; LeeAnet Noble, of the hit show "STOMP" NYC, who carried and later played the djembe; and William B Johnson, of "Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk!," who played buckets.

Ke$ha - We R Who We R

Song Info:

"We R Who We R" is a song by American recording artist and songwriter Kesha, from her first extended play (EP), Cannibal (2010). The song was released as the EP's lead single on October 22, 2010. It was written by Kesha, with Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco and Ammo, who also produced the song. Kesha was inspired to write the song in the wake of news that bullying had led to multiple suicides of gay youth. The song is intended to inspire people to be themselves, and as a celebration of anyone deemed quirky or eccentric. Musically, the song is a dance-pop song that incorporates elements of electropop and trance pop; Kesha's vocals have been described as a talk-singing style.

Reception of "We R Who We R" has been generally positive. Although it was criticized for not being particularly different from Kesha's previous work, reviewers felt that the song was a strong dance-pop number that combines a good rhythm with an inspiring message filled with genuine humor. "We R Who We R" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the seventeenth song in the chart's history to do so. The song reached number one in the United Kingdom, Kesha's first number one solo single there, and topped the charts in Australia. It also accomplished top-five positions on the charts Canadian and New Zealand charts. The song was Kesha's fifth consecutive solo top ten hit in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

The song's accompanying music video was directed by Hype Williams and was filmed in downtown Los Angeles. The video is presented as a underground party and has been described as showcasing a darker and sexier side of Kesha compared to previous videos. The song was performed in North America at the 2010 American Music Awards.

Music Video Info:

The music video for the song was directed by Hype Williams and was filmed in downtown Los Angeles.[28] Filming of the video involved a partial closure of the 2nd Street Tunnel as well as part of downtown Los Angeles spread out over a 48-hour period.[29] Kesha explained the idea behind the video as well as the experience during an interview with MTV News; she said that the video was different from her other videos, noting that it was going to show a sexier side of herself. She elaborated, "This video is a little bit 'sexy time'. [For] this video, I kinda thought, 'I should be blowing things up, So we closed down downtown Los Angeles and, I mean, I'm not going to give away all of it, but I do blow some stuff up."[30]

The music video for "We R Who We R" is presented as an underground party.[31] The video starts off with futuristic flashing lights. Kesha, seen in a ponytail wearing gray and black makeup, chains, ripped stockings, and a sparkly one-piece leotard made of shards of broken glass, walks through the 2nd Street Tunnel with fellow partygoers.[32][33] The scene features drag races and explosions in the background.[31][29] Close-up shots of Kesha show her wearing studs in her eyebrows and her glittery eye makeup. As cars zoom by, the video transitions into a new location at a different party. Midway through the party Kesha changes outfits to an American-flag top and pink hot pants. As the song's hook kicks in, Kesha is seen standing on the edge of a building; the music stops and Kesha stage jumps backwards off of the building's rooftop.[31] She is caught by the partygoers beneath her and the music resumes. The final scenes show Kesha dancing among fellow partygoers on a rooftop and smiling while singing "We R Who We R".[31]

Jocelyn Vena from MTV News noted that the video makes a departure from Kesha's previous music videos, in which humor is usually present; she wrote the video shows a "darker and sexier" side of the songstress.[31] Tanner Stransky from Entertainment Weekly was positive in his review of the video.[34] Stransky commented on the songs lyrical inspiration, noting the video doesn't follow the same message, saying "it doesn't so much inspire self esteem as much as it inspires just a plain ol', trashy, Ke$ha-ed out good time. Code word: party!".[34] The review ends with a quote from the song: "There’s not much to it. But do we still love it? In a direct quote from Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," "yes, of course we does!".[34]

Originally a gospel singer, he was featured on the pop-classical album Handel's Messiah – A Soulful Celebration in 1993, singing a contemporary version of "Every Valley Shall Be Exalted".[4] His first job after college in Alabama was touring with a group that sang hundreds of shows in churches over a two-year period.[5] In the mid-1990s, he toured as backup vocalist for Twila Paris.[6] In 1996, he released his debut self-titled album, for which he wrote or co-wrote eight of the eleven songs,[7] and earned a nomination for Best R&B Album at the 1996 Nashville Music Awards.[8] That year, he opened on tour for Mark Lowry,[9] and was one of several featured singers in the musical showcase Emmanuel, a national tour put together by Nashville producer Norman Miller.[10] The tour spawned an album, which won a GMA Dove Award in 1998 for Special Event Album of the Year.[11] He did mostly gospel until 1998 when he signed with a small music label.[5] The label was bought out by a large corporation and Willis took that as a cue to move on.[5] During this time he also worked to resolve the "angst" from being closeted about his sexuality, "I always felt like God really understood—but that wasn't the message I was receiving in the church.[12] So, when I moved out on my own I really internalized that message that God makes us who we are and that it's up to us to embrace that or not. I chose to embrace all those things as freedom, and that freedom begat the freedom I experience now."[5] He cites his being gay as important to his transitioning out of gospel music,"I think there's this unspoken denial that you go through in gospel—maybe so in other musical art forms too—but I just felt for me it just wasn't easy to keep perpetuating that."[5] Willis is now openly gay and resides in Atlanta, GA.[1][5] He now sees both his color and sexuality as assets rather than liabilities.[13]

In 2000 he was working with the french boys band 2Be3 and when doing some publicity for their album in Paris one of the bandmates introduced him to house musician and producer David Guetta.[1] Guetta invited Willis to the studio and the next day they wrote 'Just a Little More Love.'[1] Willis co-wrote and provided most of the vocals on Guetta's debut album Just a Little More Love, including the hit title track.[14]

His music genres have included gospel music, disco, pop rock, and R&B. Willis is active on social networks including MySpace, Facebook and recently Twitter. He often adds live photos and videos from his tours and answers questions from fans.[15] Throughout 2009 he toured with David Guetta through Europe in support of One Love. He has also been doing solo European dates.[16] In November 2009 he performed at Danceclub C4 in Steyer, Austria for their 2nd Anniversary Party.[17] A documentary about him, Inside Out, directed by Robert Jason and Eric Miclette for Complete World Domination is to be released early 2010 alongside the "Gettin' Over" single.[18]

His solo single "Louder (Put Your Hands Up)" was released on iTunes October 12, 2010.[19] Willis co-wrote the song with Cutfather and Joe in Sweden.[20] The video premiered on DailyMotion October 26, 2010.[21] Shot in Los Angeles, the video was directed by Billie Woodruff. The song reached #1 on the Dance/Club Play Songs Billboard Chart the week of January 8, 2011.[22]
