Oleta Adams - Get Here

Song Info:

"Get Here" is a pop ballad written and originally performed by the American singer/songwriter Brenda Russell, and was the title track of her 1988 album.[1]

The song's most famous version was recorded by Oleta Adams in 1990, reaching number 4 in the UK[2] and number 5 in the US[3]. The song was popular during the 1990-91 Gulf War[4] as families of deployed troops in the region embraced the tune as a theme song.[5][6] Others to have covered the song include Barbara Mandrell, Paul Anka, Jonalyn Viray, Jennifer Rush, Q featuring Tracey Ackerman, Alexia Gardner, Justin Guarini, David Archuleta and Vanessa Amorosi. A humorous cover, which featured comedy sound effects after each method of transport mentioned, was performed by fictional singer Michelle Coffee in the Peter Kay series Phoenix Nights.

The Beautiful South's album Gaze included a song with the same title and, partially, similar lyrics - but reversed the theme, with Paul Heaton protesting his unwillingness to travel any distance at all for his lover. (Sample lyric: "You can get here by helicopter"/"I can barely make Blackpool sands").

Whitney Houston - I Have Nothing

Song Info:

"I Have Nothing" is a song by American singer Whitney Houston and is the third single released from The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album.

Written by David Foster and Linda Thompson, the song is a richly orchestrated power ballad about deep love and commitment to one's lover, through lines such as "I don't want to have to go where you don't follow" and "Stay in my arms if you dare/ or must I imagine you there/ Don't walk away from me/ I have nothing, nothing, nothing if I don't have you."

As of most of Houston's material, this song has been an extremely popular choice on the reality television series American Idol. It is one of the most performed songs on American Idol, with six times, tied for second place alongside Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." Phil Collins's "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" is in first place.

After the back to back successes of Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and "I'm Every Woman," The Bodyguard soundtrack album had become a massive international success. "I Have Nothing" became yet another hit, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and being certified gold by the RIAA.

On secondary charts, the song became a hit with a number 1 peak (for 2 weeks) on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and a number 4 peak on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Internationally, the song performed well in the UK (peaking at number 3) and hit the top twenty in a few other markets; but performed moderately in Australia (number 28), Germany (number 39), and Switzerland (number 39). Remarkably, for the weeks on the Billboard chart ending March 13 and March 20, Houston had three 3 songs in the Top 11: "I Will Always Love You," "I'm Every Woman," and "I Have Nothing;" all from her Bodyguard soundtrack.

The song received nominations for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and for a 1994 Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B Single - Female, although not winning either nomination.

Music Video Info:

The music video was directed by Steve Barron and shows Houston performing the song to an audience in a dining room hall. The video is intercut with scenes from the movie The Bodyguard.

Roxette - Anyone

Song Info:

"Anyone" is like its predecessor 'Wish I could fly' a ballad, with instruments including piano, saxophone and strings. "Anyone" was initially planned to be the first single from Have A Nice Day, but the group feared it would sound to "Roxette-ish" for a comeback single[citation needed], and they decided to chose "Wish I Could Fly" instead. After the success of "Wish I Could Fly", fans believed the next single release would be "Stars" or "Crush On You"[citation needed] (both are dance songs atypical for Roxette). But in the end, it was "Anyone" that was picked as the second single. The B-sides are the demo of "Anyone", "Cooper" (a track from Have A Nice Day), and "You Don't Understand Me (Abbey Road Sessions 1995)". The maxi-single includes the video of "Wish I Could Fly". In Japan, a double A-side with "Pay The Price" was released, although there is no video for this song.

Music Video Info:

The video of "Anyone", directed by Jonas Åkerlund, was banned by some TV stations (including MTV)[citation needed], because of a scene in which Marie Fredriksson attempts suicide by drowning herself in the sea. The video was recorded in Portugal in the peninsula of Tróia. The clip was only broadcast after 10pm in many countries, because some believed it suggested young people to commit suicide[citation needed].

Phil Collins - Groovy Kind of Love

Song Info:

Phil Collins recorded a new version of "A Groovy Kind of Love" in 1988. He had originally suggested the song as a good one for collaborator Stephen Bishop to record, with Collins producing, but decided to record it himself when he took a starring role in the film Buster, which had a 1960s setting.[9] The song was originally released on Buster: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and also appeared on his Serious Hits... Live! album, as well as several Phil Collins compilation albums.

This version went the Mindbenders release one better, hitting #1 in both the US and UK charts, and it remains the only Collins single to top the charts in both countries.[4] It also reached #1 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart. The song earned Collins a nomination for Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1989; he lost to Bobby McFerrin's song "Don't Worry, Be Happy".

Whitney Houston - Run To You

Song Info:

"Run to You" is a song performed by Whitney Houston and is the fourth single released from The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album.

"Run to You" was written by Jud Friedman and Allan Rich. Originally intended to be a break-up song, it was approved by the production and stars. However, a month later, the director of The Bodyguard (Mick Jackson) called, saying he liked the song so much, but he'd rather have it to be a love song so the entire song was rewritten, except for the title.

All of the previous releases from The Bodyguard had been successes, landing in the top five. "Run to You" became a moderate hit, peaking at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the U.S., it spent six weeks inside the top 40, five of which were spent at the number 31 peak. Airplay and singles sales topped out at number 26 and 41, respectively. The single sales stalled at number 41 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart, most likely due to the fact its parent album, The Bodyguard, already was certified 8x platinum and nearing 9x platinum status quickly. Single sales were moderate because most consumers own the song by simply owning the album.

On other Billboard charts, the song was moderately well received. On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, it reached a peak position of number 31. The song cracked the top 10 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, peaking at number 10.

Internationally, it was not as well received, except in the UK, peaking at number 15.

"Run to You" and it's soundtrack-mate "I Have Nothing," were nominated for a 1992 Academy Award for Best Original Song, but they lost to "A Whole New World" from Aladdin.

The music video for "Run to You" features scenes from The Bodyguard intercut with scenes of an angelic Houston running on clouds.

Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

Song Info:

"It Must Have Been Love" is a power ballad written by Per Gessle and performed by the Swedish pop duo Roxette. The ballad became the duo's 3rd #1 hit in the United States[1], and is one of their best-selling releases, leading the single to be certified gold in a number of countries.

The song, included on the soundtrack to the hugely popular film Pretty Woman, rivals "The Look", "Joyride" and "Listen to Your Heart" as the song most closely associated with them. In 2005, Per Gessle received an award from BMI after the song's four millionth radio play.[2]

Music Video Info:

The video was shot in a big bedroom, with Fredriksson singing and Gessle playing the guitar. It included scenes from the Pretty Woman movie. There is also an original version of the video without the movie scenes. Original video is only available on the VHS titled The Videos. According to Fredriksson shooting the video was a surreal experience.

Taylor Dayne - Love Will Lead You Back

Song Info:

"Love Will Lead You Back" is a song performed by Taylor Dayne. Released as the second single from Dayne's second album Can't Fight Fate (following the more uptempo "With Every Beat of My Heart"), the ballad debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on January 27, 1990. It reached number one on April 7 that same year and spent 15 weeks in the Top 40. It also reached number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart [1] and was certified Gold in the U.S. by the RIAA.

Music Video Info:

The video was very simple; it shows Dayne and her band in a studio performing the song. The video was released both in black-and-white and sepia tones. In the video, Dayne holds in her hand what seems to be the lyrics of the song, or possibly a letter from her lover.

Peter Cetera - Glory Of Love

Song Info:

"Glory of Love" is a popular song written by Peter Cetera, David Foster and Cetera's wife at the time, Diane Nini, and recorded by Cetera shortly after he left the band Chicago to pursue a solo career. The song was Cetera's first hit single and was included on his 1986 album, Solitude/Solitaire.

The song was originally recorded for inclusion in the soundtrack for Rocky IV, but was passed up. It was instead added to the soundtrack for the film The Karate Kid, Part II.

The single peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 2, 1986, remaining in that spot for two weeks. It also spent five weeks atop the U.S. adult contemporary chart [1]. The song achieved similar success in the UK, peaking at number three on the UK Singles Chart, where it was the 26th best-selling single of 1986.

The version of the song as released as a single and on Cetera's album Solitude/Solitare is edited, missing the beginning eight-second section of the song's bridge (which is heard in the actual Karate Kid II film).

Whitney Houston - Where Do Broken Hearts Go

Song Info:

"Where Do Broken Hearts Go" is the fourth single from Whitney Houston's second album, Whitney. The ballad was released in March 1988. The song was written by Frank Wildhorn and Chuck Jackson. Wildhorn approached Jackson about the opportunity to write for Whitney Houston. He gave him the title, and Wildhorn completed the music & lyrics for the song.

Initially, Houston did not want to record the song, feeling there was no special message to convey. However, Arista Records CEO Clive Davis believed the song would go to number one if she recorded it, so she agreed. The single became Houston's seventh consecutive number one.

Music Video Info:

The music video (directed by Peter Israelson) features Houston breaking up with a boyfriend and reflecting on happy memories; asking herself the title question, "where do broken hearts go?" At the conclusion of the music video, the couple reunites.

The video was moderately controversial since the ambiguous ethnic background of Houston's love interest highlighted the racial sensitivites that accompanied Houston's success during the 1980s. The singer had been criticized for "selling out" and "acting white". A mostly-black audience jeered when "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" was nominated for an award at the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards.

Madonna - Crazy For You

Song Info:

"Crazy for You" is a song by American recording artist Madonna for the 1985 film Vision Quest. It was released on March 2, 1985 by Geffen Records as the first single from the soundtrack album of the film, and later included on the ballads compilation Something to Remember (1995). The song also appears as a remix on the greatest hits albums The Immaculate Collection (1990) and Celebration (2009), and was re-released as a single in the form of this remix on February 24, 1991 by Sire Records to promote the former of these two albums. Producers Jon Peters and Peter Guber, along with music director Phil Ramone, decided to use Madonna after listening to her previous recordings. They employed John Bettis and Jon Lind to write the song. After reading the script of the film, Bettis and Lind wrote the song about the situation in which the lead characters meet at a nightclub. Initial recording sessions did not impress Bettis and Lind, and they felt that "Crazy for You" would be dropped from the soundtrack. However, a new version was recorded which did impress them and was added to the album.

John "Jellybean" Benitez was the producer for the song, and it was a challenge for him, as previously he was associated with recording dance-pop songs only. Initially Warner Bros. Records did not want the song to be released as a single, since they believed that "Crazy for You" would take away the attention from Madonna's sophomore release Like a Virgin. In the end, Peters and Guber convinced Warner officials to greenlight the release of the single. "Crazy for You" ushered a new musical direction for Madonna, as previously she had not recorded any songs in the ballad genre. It features instrumentation from snare drums, harp, bass synthesizerelectric guitar. Lyrically the song talks about sexual desire between two lovers and consists of innuendos. It received positive reception from contemporary critics and scholars, and earned a Grammy Award nomination in 1986 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. and

The song became Madonna's second number-one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as well as reaching the peak position in the charts of Australia and Canada. It also reached number-two in the charts of Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, where it was released twice, once in 1985 and again in 1991. Madonna has performed "Crazy for You" in two of her concert tours – The Virgin Tour in 1985 and the Re-Invention World Tour in 2004. The performances were included in the home video releases of the tours. The song has been covered by a number of artists.
