"Get Here" is a pop ballad written and originally performed by the American singer/songwriter Brenda Russell, and was the title track of her 1988 album.[1]
The song's most famous version was recorded by Oleta Adams in 1990, reaching number 4 in the UK[2] and number 5 in the US[3]. The song was popular during the 1990-91 Gulf War[4] as families of deployed troops in the region embraced the tune as a theme song.[5][6] Others to have covered the song include Barbara Mandrell, Paul Anka, Jonalyn Viray, Jennifer Rush, Q featuring Tracey Ackerman, Alexia Gardner, Justin Guarini, David Archuleta and Vanessa Amorosi. A humorous cover, which featured comedy sound effects after each method of transport mentioned, was performed by fictional singer Michelle Coffee in the Peter Kay series Phoenix Nights.
The Beautiful South's album Gaze included a song with the same title and, partially, similar lyrics - but reversed the theme, with Paul Heaton protesting his unwillingness to travel any distance at all for his lover. (Sample lyric: "You can get here by helicopter"/"I can barely make Blackpool sands").
