Mike Posner - Cooler Than Me

Song Info:

"Cooler Than Me" was released by Mike Posner in April of 2010. Since its release it has peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100[1] and reached number one on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay in its July 31, 2010 issue. The instrumental was produced by Gigamesh. Another version, labeled "Gigamesh Remix", was released on Mike Posner's October 2009 mixtape One Foot Out the Door.

Speaking in August 2010 to noted UK urban writer Pete Lewis - Assistant Editor of Blues & Soul[2] - Posner described the background to the song: "A lotta people don’t know I recorded that song while was still a student, and that I recorded it in my dorm-room on an extremely cheap microphone! So to now be hearing it on the radio in The States and over here is very special for me, knowing that I made it in such a makeshift manner! And while yes, it is about a specific girl in my class I had a crush on - though I’m not gonna tell you her name, because she doesn’t deserve any notoriety! - it’s also about a specific TYPE of girl! Because there are girls like that EVERYWHERE! You know, everybody knows that girl who thinks she’s cooler than them! Which is why I figured I’d just try to capture that moment of feeling snubbed! Because all my songs are either driven by something that’s happened to me, or by something I’ve felt on the inside.”

Music Video Info:

In the music video, Posner starts out at a concert singing some of his songs before an enthusiastic audience. After the show he goes driving with his friends, who then drop him off at the Roosevelt Hotel on Los Angeles' Hollywood Blvd.[3] After a short ride in an elevator, Posner enters a hotel suite, where he joins a party already in progress. The pop channel Fuse deletes the opening scene. Throughout the course of the video, Posner tries on different styles of sunglasses including Oakley Razorblades, Holbrooks, Jupiters, Frogskins, and 3D glasses. While he is trying each pair on, it evokes a different perception of the party currently going on in the apartment. In the end, he is seen leaving the hotel that morning with his original sunglasses back on. The video, directed by Jason Beattie,[4] features cameos by Louie Vito, The Dingo, Chelsea Chanel "CC" Dudley and Christopher Pfaff from Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory.[citation needed]

Will.I.Am & Nicki Minaj - Check It Out

Song Info:

"Check It Out" is a song performed by American rapper will.i.am and Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj.[1] The song, written by will.i.am and Minaj, samples the 1979 hit single, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles. After release, it debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 78 and number 48 on the Canadian Hot 100. It appears on Minaj's debut album, Pink Friday[2], though it was not released as a single from the album. The UK version also features additional vocals from will.i.am's close friend and British singer. Cheryl Cole.[3]

Music Video Info:

A music video for the single was shot over the weekend of September 26 in a studio in Los Angeles director Rich Lee.[13] In an interview with MTV News Will.i.am stated "You can expect to see a bunch of flyness as far as the outfits. When I say flyness, I’m talking about Nicki’s outfits. She’s looking super-duper fly and whatnot."[7] Nicki also commented on the video shoot and its theme, stating "We’re doing almost like an ode to Japanese culture and Japanese anime. I’m obviously a big fan and I’ve joined forces with like the only boy that I know that’s also able to capture that culture."[7] Ironically, the text that appears throughout the video is actually Korean rather than Japanese. A behind the scenes video was released along with the interview.[14][15] Director Rich Lee said that the video had a "weird, futuristic Korean TV show" theme.

The music video for the single was released October 25, 2010.[16] The video starts on a simple soundstage. A gentleman introduces the pair to an audience of women similarly dressed in black and sporting boxy sunglasses. As the song begins playing from a boom box, Nicki — wearing a creatively shaped teal, cream and mauve hat, blond wig and tan outfit — raps to the camera that she's a "savage/ Haters you can kill yourself." When the chorus arrives, so do two will.i.ams dressed in white jackets, striped shirts and black pants. Then two dancers, clad in futuristic clothing and goggles, begin grooving and suddenly multiply into five more clones all executing the same moves. The scene flips back to the camera featuring Nicki, and there's now only one will.i.am and two Nicksters. When the beat slows down for the song's bridge, Nicki is in a new outfit, a pink and white bodysuit with a black wig. Then will.i.am, who received flack for performing during the VMAs in what many described as black face, appears in what one could call "white face." The producer becomes a black and white cartoon, whose face is white but hair is black, as he rhymes "step up to my level need to grow a little taller." The video ends with Nicki and Will striking poses.

A video for the UK remix was produced, which includes Cheryl Cole dancing and striking poses with will.i.am and Minaj.

Critics gave "Piece of Me" positive reviews, praising its production and defiant lyrics, while citing it as one of the highlights from Blackout. Rolling Stone ranked the song at number fifteen on their list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007. It was also commercially successful, peaking at number one in Ireland and reaching top ten positions in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it became the second single from the album to have peaked at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.

The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, portrayed Spears's life at the time and showed her with her friends disguising themselves in order to confuse the paparazzi. Isham's concept was to have Spears confidently parodying her situation. It received mixed reviews from critics, most arguing her body was digitally altered. The video was nominated in three categories at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards and won all of them, including Video of the Year. "Piece of Me" was performed on The Circus Starring Britney Spears (2009), with Spears representing a slave and performing inside a cage.

Music Video Info:

The music video for "Piece of Me" was filmed on November 27 and November 28, 2007, at the nightclub and restaurant Social Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. It was directed by Wayne Isham, who had previously worked with Spears in the music video of "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman".[33] Daily Mail reported that the video cost $500,000, her most expensive music video since the music video for "Toxic".[34] In some scenes of the music video, Spears wore a purple satin dress from American designer Marina Toybina.[35] Spears reportedly arrived twelve hours later to the set, after spending the day with her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James.[33] Isham talked about the situation, saying, "She was late. People made a big thing about it, [but] how could she not be late, when you have 50, 65, 75 people running down the street chasing her car? That was a long day for the crew. It was literally a 20-hour day for the crew. She was there for the last six hours of it. She got there late, showed up and just kicked ass".[36] He also explained the concept of the music video:

"On [the music video], I really just wanted to put the mirror back onto the whole experience. You can see that she had that kind of confidence. And, literally, every take became a more and more confident take, so that she could have fun with what was going on. Not being over-the-top sarcastic, but ... having a laugh at everything that was going on around her, with confidence. [...] The very last dance of the piece, she had her hair up, and I go, 'Can you just do one for me with your hair down?' She dropped her hair down. You'll see we intercut with her hair up and her hair down. That was the last piece. She just rocked it from her heart. She choreographed that last dance at the very end. She did that on her own and said, 'Let's go for it'".[36]

Kesha - Take It Off

Song Info:

"Take It Off" is a song by American recording artist and songwriter Kesha, from her debut album, Animal. The song was written by Kesha Serbet, Lukasz Gottwald and Claude Kelly and it was produced by Dr. Luke with vocal editing done by Emily Wright. It was released as the fourth official single from the album on July 13, 2010. "Take It Off"'s initial writing consisted of Kesha attending a drag show and becoming really turned on by transvestite men taking their clothing off. The song is an upbeat dance pop song that uses heavy amounts of auto tune and utilizes an electro infused beat.

Critical reception of the song has been mixed to positive. A complaint amongst critics was the demonstration of overly processed vocals with the use of auto-tune. Other critics felt the song was a strong, irresistible dance-pop song, strictly made for the dance floor with a great carefree message. Due to strong digital sales from the release of Animal, the song charted in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada before being announced as a single. After being released as a single the song reached the top ten in Canada, Australia and the United States. "Take It Off" has sold over a million copies in the United States as of October 2010.

Two music videos for the single were released. The first video features Kesha and her friends on another planet dancing around in a mosh pit while slowly turning into star dust as they "Take It Off". The inspiration for the video was about taking off your inhibitions and being "raw and real." The second video features Jeffree Star and features a more dominant animal theme while drawing from 80's themed inspiration such as; Tron, David Bowie in Labyrinth, and Revenge of the Nerds. On August 13, 2010 Kesha performed "Take It Off" along side earlier singles "Your Love Is My Drug" and "Tik Tok" on NBC's Today Show.

Music Video Info:

The original video for "Take It Off" premiered on Vevo on August 3, 2010.[23] It was directed by Paul Hunter and Dori Oskowitz.[24] Kesha revealed the main idea behind the video in an interview explaining that "[the video was] about [her] and all [her] hot vampire babe friends breaking into a hotel on another planet, and at the end we all turn into this beautiful stardust. Once you take it all off, all your inhibitions, your clothes, we're all made up of the same thing."[25] She explained that she did not want the video to just be about "Taking it off", that the message behind the video and the theme wasn't "just about taking off your clothes and rolling in glitter. It's also about taking off your inhibitions and being raw and real".[26]

The video starts off with Kesha seen on a motorcycle. She proceeds to walk as her friends follow behind her as they enter a motel area. As the chorus of the song starts, Kesha and her friends start to run around the motel dancing and jumping off railings. The friends gather around an empty pool and start tearing at each others clothing; While this is happening it is revealed they that are on a different planet and Kesha is seen rolling around in sand. Slowly as some of the friends start taking off their clothing, they begin to turn into star dust. The group starts to dance in the pool with some of the party goers exploding into dust. The remainder of the friends continue to dance in the dust that is now covering the bottom of the pool. As this is happening they all begin to lose different parts of their bodies as they explode into multicolored star dust. The video ends with everyone as dust with Kesha beginning to "unzip" herself as she turns into yellow dust.

Jocelyn Vena of MTV News met the video with a positive review. She noted that Kesha "manages to embrace her inner party animal and throw a neon-colored party at an abandoned motel in the middle of nowhere." She stated that "While the concept of "a lot of pretty people dancing at dusk" is pretty simple, the neon colors manage to amp up the video, as does the colored sand that's thrown around in the air and mixed with glitter." Her conclusion of the video and of Kesha was that as simple as it may be, "she manages to be both sexy and fun while rolling around in the desert."[27]

Ke$ha - Your Love Is My Drug

Song Info:

"Your Love Is My Drug" is a song by American recording artist and songwriter Kesha, from her debut album, Animal. It was released as the album's third single on May 21, 2010. The song was written by Kesha, Pebe Sebert, with Ammo, who co-produced the song with Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. "Your Love Is My Drug"'s initial writing took place during a plane ride. Kesha stated the song had a carefree message and wasn't meant to be taken too seriously.

Critical reception of the song has been mixed to positive. Critics complimented the hook but had mixed reactions with the chorus. Some praised Kesha for knowing her way around a strong pop chorus, while others called it predictable and dull. Prior to the release of Animal, the song charted in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Since being released as a single it has gone on to reach the top five in Australia and the United States, as well as reaching the top ten in Canada. It has gone on to sell over two million copies in the US alone.

Kesha performed the song alongside "Tik Tok" on the thirty-fifth season of Saturday Night LiveThe Beatles' Yellow where she was covered in glow in the dark tribal-like make-up. In the music video, Kesha is portrayed in the desert while being chased around by her love interest. The main idea behind the video is being so in love with someone that you lose your head, comparable to love being a drug. The video features a digital animation aspect which was inspired by

Music Video Info:

The music video for the song, directed by Honey,[20] was shot on April 6 and April 7, 2010 in the Lancaster, California desert.[21] It premiered on Vevo at 12:01 a.m. on May 13, 2010.[22] Kesha described the concept behind the video in an interview, "I wanted it to be like a psychedelic trip of the mind, comparable with being so disgustingly in love with someone that you lose your head."[1] She chose to also incorporate an animal aspect to the video explaining that she was "a huge animal lover".[23] Kesha elaborated on the experience, "I also ride an elephant — no big deal! — and, um, I dance around a cave with black-light body paint and a python. I was in a cave, in the desert, and it was really fun."[1] When asked about the inspiration for the video, she said "This video was inspired by the Beatles' Yellow Submarine movie, the animation aspect. There's a little bit of [that] in there too".[1]

The video begins with Kesha waking up next to her love interest; she then proceeds to run away while being chased by the man. Kesha walks through the desert while split scenes of her are shown where she is riding an elephant and wearing a tiger mask while crawling around in the sand. They are later seen on a boat singing and pretending to row while digitally animated water is added. It then cuts to a scene of all animation in which Kesha is portrayed as a mermaid. The mermaid and the man share a kiss; the video then jumps to a scene on a rocky hillside with Kesha walking around the sand with the man standing above on a rock. The video then cuts to another scene where Kesha is covered in glow in the dark body paint while dancing around in a cave with a python around her neck.[24] The video ends with Kesha and her lover sitting around a campfire while still in the desert.[25]

James Montgomery from MTV said that "Your Love Is My Drug" was a "supremely catchy pop tune" and that the video was "the perfectly blissed-out accompaniment." Montgomery chided the video for "not making much sense" but noted "that hardly matters" as "Kesha has stumbled on a perfect formula for pop success: Don't think too big, or too much. Sometimes an elephant ride is just an elephant ride". His conclusion of the video and of Kesha herself was, "It's a lot harder than you'd think to make something seem this effortless. Like I said, you can accuse Kesha of many things — but don't ever say she's not smart. "[24]

"Say It Right" is a pop/R&B song released by Canadian singer Nelly Furtado. It was written by Nelly Furtado, Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley and Nate "Danja" Hills for Furtado's third album, Loose (2006). It was co-produced by Timbaland and Danja and released as the album's third single in North America and Australia (see 2006 in music). The song served as the album's fourth single in certain European and Asian countries. It was released digitally in the United Kingdom in March 2007. It was the album's fifth single in Latin America. "Say It Right" received positive reviews from critics praising its high quality production as well as commenting on the lyrical content and Furtado's vocal performance. The song attained worldwide success, topping the charts in more than thirty countries including the United States, Spain, France, New Zealand, Canada and many European countries. The accompanying music video for the song portrays Furtado singing it in various costumes and various locations. The song has been performed on a number of live appearances by Furtado including her third headlining Get Loose tour.

Music Video Info:

The music video for "Say It Right" was directed by British duo Rankin & Chris and filmed in Los Angeles, California in late October 2006.[11] It was shot back-to-back with the video for "All Good Things (Come to an End)", the album's third single in Europe.[12] Furtado called the video her "first action thing" since the video for her 2000 single, "I'm like a Bird", and said that it featured her experiencing what she called "a total rock-star moment. It's so iconic."[12] The mini-feathered cocktail dress Furtado wears at the opening of the video was designed specifically for her by Australian designer Alex Perry, who said, "It's so cool because she's just undergone a bit of a revamp from what her previous image was; she's become a little more sexy and glamorous."[13] The clip starts with a helicopter landing on a black helipad bearing Furtado's name on top of a building, and Furtado getting out. She is shown on the roof of the building throughout the video, with the Los Angeles skyline in the background. The video features mostly face shots of her and Timbaland intercut with shots of dancers, under the careful guidance of internationally acclaimed Puerto Rican choreographer Gabriel Rivera. Furtado described the clip as "a throwback to the '80s ... the more surreal side" because the shots of her and Timbaland reminded her much of those of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart in videos for Eurythmics' singles, and "the strange relationship [they] had, where ... you get this intense vibe from it. And Tim and me, we're partners, we vibe on a serious creative level, so the video captures that energy."[12] The video ends with Furtado climbing back into the helicopter, which flies off. The video debuted on MTV's Total Request Live in the U.S. on November 6 and on Canada's MuchMusic in the week ending November 16. It reached number nine on the Total Request Live[14] it returned to the countdown on December 14 and peaked at number one twice.[15] The video reached number one on the MuchMusic series Countdown for the week ending February 16.[16] The "Say It Right" video was retired from TRL after spending forty days on the countdown.[17] At the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, Furtado was nominated in the category of Female Artist of the Year for "Say It Right" and "Maneater".[18] "Say It Right" was nominated for the MuchMoreMusic Award and in the Best International Video by a Canadian category at the 2007 MuchMusic Video Awards.[19] MTV International certified the "Say It Right" video platinum for more than 6,000 plays on the MTV network.[20][21]
