It was written by Furtado, Salaam Remi and Hernst Bellevue for Furtado's first compilation album, The Best of Nelly Furtado (2010). It was produced by Salaam Remi and Staybent Krunk-A-Delic and released as the lead single from the album on October 12, 2010.

The music video for "Night Is Young" was directed by Alan Ferguson and filmed in Toronto, Canada through October 13 and 14, 2010.[5] Furtado said the song is "not necessarily a love song" and that "it's about relationships in many different forms." She then added, "It's about celebrating, reminiscing ... and having a good time and enjoying life."[6] The video begins with Furtado conducting a choir, 2 members of the choir look at each other during the performance, after they perform, Furtado and the members of the choir, including night cyclists, dancers, skaters and young people going to a party, at the end of the video, the couple kiss.[7] Fefe Dobson also appears in the video.[8][9] The video premiered on her YouTube channel on November 1, 2010, and became available for download on November 16.[10]
